Ministry Team | Mr Stewartie Laverty – Caretaker

Stewartie has been serving our church in this capacity, as caretaker, since he was 19 years old.  His mother preceded him in this role.  Stewartie’s love for Dervock Presbyterian Church was evident even as a youth of 19 when he used to re-polish all the bits his mother missed.  Stewartie is responsible for a whole manner of jobs, he is meticulous in how well he keeps the graveyard maintained, he still digs graves (manually) in the old part of our cemetery, he cleans the halls, pre boils the boilers before all church functions, he is the first to arrive and always the last to leave.  If you need the halls opened, seated or ready for anything, he’s your man!

Recently (Sept 2015), Stewartie’s 50 plus years of dedication to Dervock Presbyterian Church was recognised when the Moderator of the General Assembly, The Rt. Rev. Dr. D.I.J. McNie presented him with a painting of our Meeting House.

Book Club

A small group of us meets at Dervock Presbyterian Church manse, usually on the last Friday of the month at 2:30pm.  We enjoy a cup of coffee and a chat through a book that we’ve read over the course of the previous month.  Here’s some of the books and comments on them that we’ve read so far-

“Our first book ‘God’s Smuggler’ introduces you to a teenage boy who goes out in the middle of the night to play tricks on invading Germans and from then on wards you will be hooked to follow his adventures which even shocked himself becoming a Christian and finding God’s plan smuggling bibles into communist countries leading to a worldwide organisation today- Open Doors!”

The Hiding Place- “This is the inspirational story of Corrie Ten Boom who said ‘every experience God gives us, every person he puts in our life is the perfect preparation for the future that only God can see.’  Spinster Corrie in her fifties, sister and elderly father a watchmaker in Holland were a respected and loved christian family, shown at the start of the book when everyone called to celebrate the shop’s 100th birthday.  But when Jews started to be persecuted, her Father referred to them as God’s chosen people and Corrie hid them with God guiding her to safe contacts they knew, including in a secret room which lead to the family’s arrest and imprisonment in a concentration camp.  Even here, with the death of her father and sister, she knew ‘there is no pit which God’s love is not still deeper’ and as each new need arose a new answer came from God.”

So far, we’ve read –

  • God’s Smuggler- Brother Andrew
  • Just do it- Kevin Deyoung
  • The Hiding Place- Corrie Ten Boom

If you have any ideas of Good Christian books that we should read, or if you’d like to join us, please see the Rev. Moore.

Prayer

Here at Dervock Presbterian Church, we believe prayer is crucial in both our church and personal life.

Please don’t forget our weekly prayer times – we’d love to have you along at any of our prayer times.  There is no expectancy on you to pray out loud, just from your heart!

  • Dedicated congregational Prayer time- First Wednesday of every month (8.00pm)
  • Weekly Prayer time- Every Wednesday after midweek bible study (8.00pm)
  • Weekly Prayer time- Every Lord’s Day Morning, before worship (11.15am)
  • Elders Prayer time- Before Lord’s Day worship (11:50am)

Prayer Diary

“ I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now”  Philippians 1:3-5

Monday– Start off the week by praying for your fellow brothers and sisters and family members who are in need of your prayers.

Tuesday– It’s a blessing to meet freely to worship God.  Many of our brothers and sisters around the world don’t have this freedom.  Pray for them by using the Open Doors 2016 World Watch list.

Wednesday– Thank God for the community of Dervock and the wider Ballymoney area.

Thursday– We thank God for the people who serve where we cannot.  We want God to be with our faithful missionaries.

Friday- Dervock Presbyterian Church is not an isolated congregation.  We are one of over 20 other congregations that form the Presbytery of Route.  Each month we will engage in partnership with our fellow congregations and follow their work in prayer.

Saturday- We want God to bless the work and witness of our own congregation.  Every month we will focus on a different area within our own church.

Sunday– The psalmist reminds us ‘the entrance of Thy word bringeth light’, pray that God’s word would encourage us in our walk with Him, that God would be glorified through our worship services and that people would be drawn irresistibly to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
